Next time this player sits down to play cards his subconscious will still remember this gruesome beat. Hand selection for this categorical player will be changed to a little tighter playing method. Hands like Ace King or Ace Queen that would generally be connected with a raise may only be called now. The absence of raise with Ace King or Ace Queen causes this player to lose again to what he deems a “bad beat ” although this bad beat might have been evaded had the player raised to begin with. Or maybe the player folds to a raise with Ace Queen to only find that they’d have won the hand had they played.

Due to the loss still lingering in their mind, hand selection has become very tight, so turning a possible winning session into a losing one. So what can be done? In the case of casual poker players who don’t earn a living wage from playing cards, they can simply stop playing for awhile. The period of time varies from individual to individual, it may be a few hours, or it may be a month. The important thing we are trying to find here is a disassociation from the first bad beat so that the player can play their game. In the case of semi-professional and pro poker players a month long break is out of the question. Again, a disassociation from the hand is mandatory. Semi-professionals can have a tougher time with this, as pros can mostly move past a bad beat in a shorter period.
